A posthumous collection of previously unreleased recordings from the Big Mo vaults, Portraits offers ten gems spanning studio sessions and live performances. The first seven tracks were cut at Big Mo Studio in Kensington, Maryland, featuring Danny Gatton on guitars and lap steel, John Previti on acoustic and electric bass, Bill Holloman on saxophone and B3, and Shannon Ford on drums. The final three tracks were captured live at the Roxy in Washington DC, with Dave Elliot on drums and Bruce Swaim on tenor sax, capturing the incendiary energy of Gatton’s stage presence. The collection includes the original version of “Pretty Blue,” later re-recorded for 88 Elmira St.
