“A Jazzman of Note” — The Washington Post

Rick Whitehead is a jazzman of note. In his case, though, the note is self-effacing. “I’m a limited player,” says the D.C. area guitarist, who will perform with his trio tomorrow night at the Inn at Glen Echo. “I can’t play everything. I just try to play what I know well.”

But the Washington Area Music Awards disagrees. It recently nominated Whitehead for best new artist, best new recording and best jazz instrumentalist. His trio includes bassist John Previti and drummer Barry Hart. The three recently recorded their debut album, “Live in Captivity,” at Wally Cleaver’s Studio in Fredericksburg.

“I’ve known Rick for a long time,” says Previti, who has performed with Danny Gatton, Paul Simon and Doc Cheatham. “He’s always been a great player. He’s paid his dues and it’s about time he got some recognition.”
